Lib Rotan and George Powell oral history interview, 1993 March 8
Description
Elizabeth "Lib" Rotan and George Powell describe their experiences in high school athletics as basketball coaches and physical education teachers. Mrs. Rotan coached high school basketball from 1946-1965 at Cramerton High School and Myers Park High School, and Mr. Powell began coaching in the 1950s at Myers Park High School. They talk about big changes to the game over time including desegregation and integration of school sports, increasing opportunities for girls over time, and rule changes to women's basketball. They also talk about specific threats to funding and support of girls 'athletics programs in schools in the Charlotte region and how TItle IX improved funding. Although Mr. Powell did not coach Black student athletes as schools were segregated during his career, he shares his opinions on why he believes they succeed in basketball.
