Wake Forest student rally
Description
Harvey Gantt delivers a campaign speech to his base and students at Wake Forest University. Gantt says that North Carolina is ready for a change and that his opponent, Jesse Helms, has been in DC for too long and won't debate, won't campaign for most of the state. Gantt says that government needs to invest in education to compete internationally, and needs to fund Head Start, school lunch programs, and Title I. He says that what created the middle class was the Federal Housing Association and GI Bill, and that Democrats created those policies. He continues, saying that government should provide student loans and grants to any student who wants to go to college and tax deduction for tuition. He criticizes Helms for being against education, and says he wants to shut down the Department of Education, votes against funding student loans, Head Start, and student lunches. He also criticizes Helms for voting against environmental protections, the minimum wage, Medicare and Social Security, receiving donations through his Jesse Helms Foundation from foreign governments and multinational corporations while he's in the Foreign Relations Committee, and giving tax breaks to the wealthy and corporations. Gantt concludes by encouraging young people to participate in politics and vote.
