Harvey Gantt delivers a campaign speech at North Carolina State University for students enrolled there and at Meredith College. He encourages college students to be involved politically and to vote for Democratic candidates. Gantt says that people are losing hope in the American Dream. He criticizes his opponent Jesse Helms, saying that he won't debate or meet with citizens, and that he doesn't understand that North Carolina needs more education to prepare for the 21st century. Gantt says that he supports early childhood development (Head Start, Smart Start), college loans and grants, and tax deductions for college and job training. He says that Helms is against federal support for education, as well as Medicare and Social Security. Gantt encourages students to get 15 friends to vote.
